Black belt dust in drill press

This is my first drill press (Delta 17-950L) so I'm not sure if this is normal. I tightened the belts so there was about 1" give at the center point. Inside the case enclosing the belts, some black dust, apparently from the belts has already accumulated in the short time I've run it. Is this normal or do I have the belts too tight?

Probably just some wear where the belts are seating into the new pulleys

Most likely normal as Steve says. You might just check that the two pulleys are lined up so the belt isn't running at an angle.
