Just got the beall buffing system. Is there an ideal speed at which you should use?

I keep it to about 1000 rpm tops...I don't prefer my "work of art" flying across the room when being ripped from my hands by the speeding buffing wheel... ;)

I have mine mounted on a stand alone 1725 RPM motor.

Bobby....I vary my speed depending on what I buffing and what the finish on it is. Be aware, that if you have the speed set too high you can burn a finish. My bottle stoppers sometimes have an interesting line burned around them that is from the finish getting burned during polishing. It seems to me that if you are buffing too fast or too long on thinner stock, the stock will crack due to the heat generated.

Yep I use a stand alone also!
Beall recommends a 1725 rpm motor but most slow speed motors are rated at 1750 and thats what I use.
Here it is off there web site
"The Wood Buff is designed to be used with a 1/3 hp or more, 1725 motor. This should be sufficient for most buffing tasks; larger items or a more vigorous buffing style may call for 1/2 hp. The 3,000 r.p.m. of most grinder motors will be too fast for the 8" wheels sold with the Wood Buff but would work well for buffing with our smaller 4" Wheels or Bowl Buffs. When you face the shaft end of the motor, the wheel should rotate counter-clockwise in order for the Wood Buff to work properly."

I use mine on the lathe, I run it at 500 rpm. I love it!

I found that if I'm just using tung oil I can go to 1250 but if I'm buffing something with a coat of deft I have to slow it down to 600 or it will melt the finsih. Great tool though.
