View Full Version : Opinions Please - Which Side to Use??

I happened upon an amazing piece of figured cherry last week and decided to use it in a small end table I was making. The most intense curl was on one side of the board, but there was not enough to make the entire top. The other side is (to me) less interesting but makes a more uniform look. My question: if this table was yours, which side would you use?

Side A?
61577 61578

or Side B?
61579 61580

Any and all opinions welcome.

Thanks Creekers

I like 'B' for its consistency.

I like the deeper color contrast better. Send side B to me since you won't need it:rolleyes:

B. The texture of the curl is more consistent, and so is the color.

I like B, so have we learned anything probably that either side will work, and you'll always wonder if you should have used the other side.

My vote is side B. That is some really nice wood!

YMMV, but I don't think there's any way I could bury that wild grain in side A underneath, I'd have to show it. But you're the one that's gotta look at it...go with your gut and ignore us! :D

Per, would this be the "crazy witch" single? ;)

I actually like the depth of side a - especially the center two boards.

Good luck,

Use side B. That top board in side A is too different in grain pattern. As someone else said, B is more consistent.

I have to say that I made a table with two different colors of grain and pattern. Every time I look at that table I wonder why I ever did that. The table will finally be replaced as soon as I can get a new table built. It's on my "to do" list for this year. Is it possible to leave the space under the top open so that the grain can be seen at all? If possible that is what I'd do and put that section with the srtaight greai toward the back.

Make it reversible... They're both too nice to hide :D

...or throw the whole thing away and start again....

Actually, I think I would pick side 'A' for the center two beautiful patterned boards. Too bad you couldn't find a bit more the same, huh?

I would say "B" too. Like the poster above me, I have a table with an errant board and I look at it every time I walk past it. GRrrrrrrrrr

I think the question ought to be; "what can I build to show off both sides of this board". Maybe a hinged door of some kind? The wood is beautiful, and I prefer 'B'.

Hans

are the boards already joined? what about resawing them to make the good curl lastlonger?

I vote for side B. It has a more consistent pattern.

Side B! I think that side A will look funny once the heartwood darkens.

Awesome wood. I like side B.

You could just hang it from the ceiling, then you look at both sides!!!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer B as well. I definitely like the grain in the middle boards of the A side best, but the contrast would bug me.
Tough call.

B - consistency of pattern.
