Travis you're work is absolutly incredible. The finsh is perfect. Nice piece of wood too. What do you buff your work with if you don't mind my asking? Do you use a beal system?

Beautiful work once again Travis! Great form, wonderful looking walnut and nice finish. I am most impressed with the Ebony collar and the way the curve of the two items flow together. Very nice work!

Another beauty Travis. If you could produce something really ugly from time to time it would make the rest of us feal better.

Another beauty for sure, Travis! I think there's some pretty neat symbolism in how the havoc caused by something as devastating as Katrina can be transformed into objects of such beauty as this.

I have to agree - this piece is just perfect.

Is this some of the same walnut my piece is turned from?

The form is butter... the finish is excellent... the grain orientation makes it even more of an attention grabber!

Travis you always nail the shape and form on your hollowforms. And you have a eye for the collar size and shape that always compliments them well. But what I think always makes your work really great is the way you choose the grain orientation. I've been looking at this and I can't really even tell how this was originally situated within the log. Somehow the grain flows with the curves in the form and makes it all come together.

Looks like hurricane season is about here too.

Thanks everyone.
Bill, I use the Beall system mounted on a stand alone motor.
Nancy, I do believe yours is from the same tree as this was from.
Thanks Curt, this was oriented side grain with the sapwood on the bottom.

Wow, another eye-popping piece, Travis!

Note to self: Google and find out where he gets that machine that applies glass to wood.

Travis,

Did you use the white diamond compound in the Beall system? I was watching the Bill Grumbine video last night and he said that it leaves white residue in the grain.

Another beauty, Travis! I always looks forward to your posts. Thanks for the ongoing inspiration.

In dark woods, diamond compound will leave a residue that can be noticeable. However, I was goofing with some horrible pine, turned a solid egg shape, dyed it black and went to polishing on the Beall. I did a heavy diamond compound application intentionally loading up the open grain. Then finished it out. It was very interesting with the contrast of black lines and grayish pores. I got the idea from an AAW magazine from 2006. Sadly the piece split and was worthless.....but it was pine so who cares. I've got a piece of walnut that I turned a poor design in....I may try it again to see if a cool finishing technique can salvage the piece.

Another great piece, Travis. I don't know if I'll ever be able to create something like that, but seeing it gives me hope.
