View Full Version : Keep drawers from falling out - suggestions?

(I couldn't decide if this post is better suited for the design forum - let me know if so)

I need some suggestions on a drawer stop that will prevent them from beign pulled out of a case.
I'm designing/bulding a silver chest that will essentially be a box on a stand. The case will be through dovetailed with a curved front with three drawers. The drawers will be of dovetail construction with a wooden runner (runner is mounted to the case sides and a dado in the drawer side itself runs on said runner).
I've seen the method of screwing a piece of wood to the drawer back that pivots up and catches the drawer divider. I'm not fond of that method as it seems clunky to me and the top drawer won't have a divider to catch it.
I was thinking of using rare earth magnets but wanted to get some feedback here on the magnets or other methods. My idea is to flush-mount a pair (one per side) of small magnets on the inside of each drawer opening (the inside of the case sides) and flush mount a corresponding magnet to the outside of the drawer side. When the magnets line up (as the drawer is pulled out) they will have enough force to "grab" the drawer. I'm sure really pulling the drawer would overcome this but I only want to slow it down and make it an effort to pull the drawer all the way out.

Feedback please.

Here are three quick options, in no particular order:

Light weight cable attached to the drawer back and the case back is an option.

Someone here had a post of it recently. Apologies but I don't remember who but it was a good idea.
