One of my other hobbies is bonsai, as I may have mentioned before. Many of the hobbyists that display their trees like to place them on a flat burl. On one of the bonsai forums there have been people asking where they can buy them so I thought I'd ask, if anyone here has access to or a source for burl slabs that are in the 12"x18" size range, finished or not, at a decent price. Some of these people will go for exotic woods like Coolibah and Jarrah, but others would rather save $ and use domestic wood like redwood, cedar or maple.

Here's an example of how they are used:

There are a number of firms that supply such species to turners that would likely be a good source for your needs. That's why I put a copy of this thread in the Turner's Forum

Joe,
Check out http://www.woodturningz.com/WeeklySpecial.aspx.
This is a good supplier for pens, but also carries the raw burls. Looks like just what you wanted.
Might check out http://www.leetreewoodworks.com/Burls_and_Wood.htm
and another link http://www.xmission.com/~burlturn/
