I need to stain my house. Right now it is bare cedar siding (western red, I believe), never finished or sealed. It was replaced about 1.5 years ago. I plan on using a solid stain, but would like to hear any advice on preperation (pressure wash, etc?) and any recommendations on stain brands. thanks guys.

Go to the website of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (first hit on Google) and click on the "installation & finishing" link.
As for brands, I usually stick with Cabot.

My house had 50 some odd years of oil and latex on it in dreadful shape ( still does in parts.).
I took a Porter Cable paint stripper / grinder to it. It can strip old oil and make the cedar shingles brand spanking new with a factory clean new finish.
I use Benjamin Alkyd solid color stain. I love the stuff!! BUT ya gotta add VOCs to it to get max penetration. And it you are in bright hot sun add a curing slowing agent.
