Stairway question

I am redoing my stairwell. They had carpeting, which I removed and the wife wants to paint everything. So I am replacing the particle board risers with 3/4 inch pine. Sanding the threads and reusing them.

What type of nail should I use on these. I have thought of using finishing screws, I believe is what they are called. But I do have plenty of finishing nails. 11/2"-2". Will these provide enough grip or will they eventually work loose from the constant use under heavy foot traffic?

Use PL construction adhesive and 15 or 16 ga. finish nails.

I just refinished my basement stairs. The risers were MDF. I painted them white and it really makes for a nice contrast with the dark stain on my pine treads. Cheaper than pine and painting is easier than finishing pine, IMHO.
