I have a porter cable model 500 that I amassed some time ago. I just unburied it and am wondering, what size belt does it take. My tape tells me 27" but I'm wondering: do I make up belts from my rolls of sanding material or do I try to cram a 24" belt on it???
I'm cornfused.

I'm not familiar with a PC 500 belt sander but there are 503 and 504 belt sanders that use a 3"x 24" belt. The 27" might have come from measuring around the rollers without a belt on. Fwiw the parts manuals for both and the instruction manual for the 504 are available at PC's website. If it's a 503/504 and it's been sitting for awhile, you might want to check the gearbox- iirc it uses 90wt oil.

Thanks for the update John, I saw the oil filler port and will check it when I get home. I'll pick up a 24" and see if it fits. You are right, I measured without a belt.
