I had a few moments this weekend (suprisingly rare) & was catching up on some recent NYW episodes. Norm was doing table saw 101 & even though it was pretty basic, I just enjoy spending the time w/ Norm - at this point I feel like I've known him for years. He was using an insert that I haven't seen one like, it was a metal plate that had a thin (maybe 2") wooden insert that "slid" into it. I don't think I'm explaining that very well, maybe someone who saw the show will remember. I was watching w/ my 2 yr old so I may have missed something - I didn't get to see the jigs segment, had to read "Goodnight Gorilla". Anyway, I wondered if anyone knew where he'd gotten the insert, I did a search this am of the usual suspects but didn't turn up anything like it.

thanks,

g

Could it have been a Tru-Cut insert? Just do a google on that brand, and it should come up. I'm not linking it here because I don't know the policies well enough and don't want to wrankle anyone.

Don't watch Norm myself, but this might be what you are talking about. You can make this entirely from wood and still use the sliding insert concept for the refill. Your only limitation is your imagination.

Better design than the Tru cut insert plate by far.

I know that the product you saw was carried by Eagle America for a bit...'don't know if they still do or if it's still made. There are other similar/different solutions available. Of course...shop-made out of 1/2" MDF or Corian cut-offs is a nice economical method considering the cost of the aluminum unit with the oak inserts you saw on NYW. $$$

The version mentioned and it's cousin:

Are both very cool ideas. The price keeps me from going that direction. The one in the link would allow you to just cut rectangles and drill the retaining holes.

I think I'm confused. Which one does Norm use? I'm looking for a better system for my unisaw.

From the description it sounds like the Wood Dynamics one.

Like I said before this style could be made from wood or plastic (cheap cutting board) and still use the replacable insert! A simpler system than the Tru-cut version. It's simpler to make than a piece of furniture.

I agree with Rick...from the picture of the Wood Dynamics unit, I'd say it's the one that Norm is using. The key is the dovetail shape of the oak inserts.
