Here's an odd idea I thought I'd throw out there. You know how they say that walnut produces some nasty chemical that kills pretty much anything around it? Well, has anyone ever thought of extracting this chemical, (I think it's called juglanis) concentrating it, and using it as an all natural weed killer? I tried this a while back with a mason jar, walnut shavings, and water but with no luck. Just curious.

Ryan, it would only work for certain species that are deemed "competitive" to Black Walnut. The front part of our property has many black walnut with a number of trees and plants that coexist quite happily. The back part, which is largely devoid of walnut, has an entirely different mix of trees and other plants.

What some folks DO use the walnut husks for is making a dye...

Ah, that must be why the un-important weeds by my shop were unaffected. I know well and good about the husks lol. Just grabbing a couple off the tree will stain your hands for a couple days. Anyways, would have been neat if it would work...being all natural and what not.
