Looking for a good site to order hardwood from. Just curious as to who you guys use.

For pen blanks so far I've used Pennstateind.com and woodturnerscatalog.com.

william fourness of penn's woods will be with you shortly I'm sure, but he has some good woods, especially spalted woods. The prices are nice too. I don't work for/with him, just passing the info on. Here's his link

There are other various places that sell nice woods, especially for pen blanks, and Andy Hoyt here on the forum sells some wood too.

It depends on what we are looking for as to where we buy.

Oak and maple - we buy direct from sawmills in Tennessee near my family home.

Cherry and birch - locally at Lumber Products (a west-coast company)

Pen blanks - cocobolo from a supplier in Florida; some exotics from a friend in Hawaii; some from Woodworker's Supply (www.woodworker.com (http://www.woodworker.com)), some from CSUSA (woodturnerscatalog.com).

Turning blanks - so far, just from John Hart here on the forum. I've looked at some of Bill Fourness' pictures and he has very nice stuff; however, at present I'm overloaded and need to move some stock

Here's one of my favorite sources for exotics. James is a great guy to work with.

Mother Nature. The prices are unbeatable, the selection is overwhelming, and the store is open 24/7 and conveniently located no matter where you live.:D Seriously.

But if you don't happen to have some laying around, I also highly recommend John Hart.

In any case he is correct. It is the best store going and the selection is unlimited. Besides, at 50 bucks a bowl for cracked something or other wood I can contend with the mosquitoes. Besides, I get to pull the cord on my Stihl and that is priceless.

Order?

You mean, as in,

BUY?!!!! That cost$ money $$$$$

Hmmmm...

My back yard.

My woodturner friends yard (and shop)

The side of the road.

The scrap bin at work.

Construction sites.

Club Raffles.

My neighbors yard (if he isn't home):D*

I think wood is like gold, it's where you find it. It's everywhere, cuz it

GROWS ON TREES!

Yay!

*no.. really I ask permission first.

The texas ebony and american sycamore pieces I just posted came from Curlywoods.com in McKinney, TX. I have also bought from Woodcraft and Rockler stores. I only buy at good prices for unique woods. If I cannot make and sell the product for at least 3 times the purchase price, I usually don't. A buddy also makes cutom doors so I get thick cutoff blanks of african mahogany and other North American hardwoods. I hear tree surgeons are good sources but haven't tried one myself. But I also harvest some from Mineola, TX. The picture below shows:

Cypress Knees (left standing) - these will become desk lamps
Cedar(red heartwood) - these will become natural edge bowls
Black walnut (brown hearwood) - these will become natural edge, too.
Cypress (right end) - these will become 2 vases and salt/pepper mills
