Has anyone had experience building furniture with Pecan. I found a sawmill recently within 45 minutes of my shop and they have Cedar, Pecan, Black Walnut and Mesquite at reasonable prices. I need to get a price sheet from them but before asking , I want to know if it is suitable for building furniture.

Definitely. It is a nice wood to work with. It is very hard and takes a stain nicely.

Pecan is a wonderful wood for furniture projects. It is quite dense (and heavy) though, therefor your tools will need to be sharp at all times. Any project that requires a lid, place more thought on the weight issues.

Pecan is great to build with and it smells heavenly when you cut it.
Post details on the place you're getting it. If the prices are good enough, I might just have to run down from Fort Worth.

Dan: It's Meyer's Cedar Yard located just south of Lampasas on 183. Nothing in the area but Country Music Stations, Live Oaks and scrub pines. Phone number is 512-556-4968. When you want Pecan, they cut the logs up, so call first :-) They have Cedar and Mesquite already cut and air dried in open sheds. The cedar I purchased was damp on the outside, but read 6% with my moisture meter. You can call and they will fax a price list.

My Dad and I made a stereo cabinet back in the 70's out of pecan. I still have it today, in great shape.

Hey Mike,
My last project I did (L shape desk) I used, pecan for the facing and pecan plywood.
It was so good to work with that I just bught more boards to make a big entertaiment center.
Here is a pic of the desk.

Luis and Jim: Nice to hear the good reports on Pecan. Really impressed with the grain and look of this wood. Thanks for replying.

I work with Pecan a lot and I love it. I made a 4 drawer dresser with it and it turned out great. I like to let it spalt a little before we mill it. You can see the project at http://lumberjocks.com/projects/4630 (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/4630)
