I am building a kitchen counter and covering it with laminate. As well the edge will be laminate.

When trimming the laminate with a flush trim bit in a router would you trim the edge first or the top first?

Thanks

Hi Fred:

Trim the edges first. You'll probably get a slight edge exposed, bust it down with a sanding block, 3x24 sanding belt, blockto fit.

Then the top., flush trim, then file top edge.

Run your fingers our edges and feel for areas where something could catch-on or slide across and tear out. File smooth.

You'll want to do it this way for 2 reason:

1. functionally when your wiping or have puddled water, no seam for liquids lay on and seep in.

2. asthetically as you look down from above the counter top you won't see a glue line.

Neil answered your question well.

I recommend lightly rubbing the finished edge with some very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to knock the sharp edge off.
