http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif This was my first time using my new shop fox hollow chisel mortiser. Well the thing bit me !!http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif Well the chisel bit me while i was installing ithttp://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif Well as i fumbled around for the First Aid kit I noticed the plastic cover for the bit. Is this to be installed on the bit while you install it. Where were you guys on that one http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif Well I figured out that those chisels are really sharp the hard way.

How were you holding the chisel? Was it the end that bit you?

When installing mine, my hand doesn't go near the points. If I have to hold something up by the points, I'll use a block of wood, but I don't recall having to do so.

If it will make you feel any better I have a bandage on my left middle finger. I had my table saw unplugged and was changing the blade. I was reaching to my left to move the throat plate over a bit to get it out of my way while reaching for a wrench on my right. I poked the saw blade with my finger and now realize it is not quite ready for sharpening; it cuts just fine.

Ben, I'm sorry to hear about your cut, but I appreciate the information. I'm getting close to setting up my mortiser and will be even more careful now that I've read of your mishap.

Be careful taking the rubber coating off freshly sharpened cutters...those bite too.
