For those that often turn large items out board, what manner of reverse chucking do you employ, given that the tailstock is usually not an option, or is a high $ option with the big Mayo's.

Is that where vacuum chucking comes into its own?

Thinking about putting together a big swing bowl lathe with some Delta parts (2hp EVS headstock), and not having a tail stock would make things far easier.

Thanks

Without a tailstock, either vacuum or a "captive" donut system are what you are limited to.

Bob, as Jim mentioned, a captive donut, holding your turning into a shallow jam-chuck is one way to turn the base of most any piece. Here's a photo showing one such set-up.

There's another option, that of using a hold which is part of the bottom "decoration." My choice, and easily done for faceplate or pin chuck types. If you find yourself cutting a few angled beads to embellish, consider holding inside or outside of one for finishing the interior. You pretty much have to use smooth jaws, but no real problem there.
