I coach a great bunch of kids in the Destination Imagination (http://www.idodi.org/) program. My team builds some amazing things and since they work in my shop they tend to build out of wood as they raid my scrap and stock. This year they really needed a jig saw to make some big scenery pieces including a fantastic 7' tree mounted on a ladder that they could climb in/over/around during their skit. (Two years ago, I decided "they" needed a band saw :) the year before that it was a drill press :p )

Anyway, I picked up a Skill brand saw which wasn't much of a tool, but I could not justify putting a $150 saw in the hands of six 12 year olds. On Friday I returned it and in the market for a real tool (the DI season is over). I know everyone says Bosch, but which model.

Input greatly appriciated.

Although I have not tried this one, there is a refurnished Dewalt (DeWalt# DW321R) at Harbor Freight Tools for $69.99. It did well on recent comparisons. I also noticed a previous generation Bosch (top-handled #1587, I think) at Home Depot for $119.

The new 1590 or 1591 models. The 1590 is the d handle model and the 1591 model is the barrel grip model which I have and like very much... great saws!

Another vote for the 1590 or 1591 Bosch models. I went with the 1591 as I prefer the barrel grip. I have average sized hands (men's glove size large) and feel very in control with it. I actually never knew a jig saw was a real tool till I got one of these. That kind of thing happens when you hang on to a Skil for about 20 years before upgrading.
