Hi Everybody!

I haven't been posting much lately, and I apologize for that. I really enjoy this fine community of woodworkers!

I have finished a couple of turnings lately. The first one is a hollowform I made from a piece of spalted birch that Sophie gave me quite a while ago. Thanks Sophie! It's about 9 inches across and 7 tall.

This next one is a different little bowl I did out of a piece of Apricot wood. I was just going to make an ordinary bowl, but uncovered the crotch figure and wanted to save it. So this is what evolved. It is maybe 6" across, and about 3" tall.

Both had lacquer finishes, which is a first for me.

The only pen I have made lately that isn't just ordinary is this one out of purple stabilized curly poplar. It's modified from a Platinum Father Sing pen. The beaded parts are from black Steelwood.

I hope you enjoy them! Merry Christmas!

Scott,

Very Cool! what unique woods, write (groan) down to the poplar for the pen. I really need to try some bowl type things.

I remember you posting that modified Father Sing pen before. It is pretty cool. Where are the Father Sing pens from? I am quite sure I remember seeing them among the myriad of catalogs I have now, but can't seem to put my finger on who make them.

Thanks Guys!

I've been making a whole string of these modified Sing pens. The one I showed before was red and didn't have the beads at the top. These kits are from Craft Supplies/The Woodturners Catalog. They are the other place to buy quality kits besides Berea. It's nice to have the option for other kits. But don't get me wrong, I still love Berea!

But for a slimline pen kit, I just think the Father sing is the nicest thing going. One tube is longer than the other, and it changes the look of the pen. The centerband is also bigger around, which gives the pen a heftier feel. I just reall like it. And I am also partial to the platinum finish.

Take care!

Scott.

I have a particular affinity for that hollowform, Scott. Great piece of wood that was turned [sic] into just the right thing to highlight the spalted birch. The bowl is also quite interesting...if you can, please post a shot from above to show us the grain figure from that crotch.

Great work! Happy holidays!

Scott,

I knew it wasn't Bera, I just couldn't remember who :)

Thanks for letting me know. Have you tried the Streamlined 7mm from Berea yet? Similar concept but the tubes are the same. Might be possible to do something similar with that one.

I am not to risky with my desing yet, but it is coming. One thing I have learned is that if you mess up a blank its not hard to turn it off and start again, but after you press it together well....thats a different story

Scott, the spalted birch is an outstanding piece of wood, the spalting is truly an eyecatcher. I keep comming back and looking at it. The form you chose is so pleasing with the lines being perfect. I appreciate you showing your work with us.

Hi Jim - Here's the picture showing the figure:

Noah - I haven't tried Berea's Streamlined Slimeline yet, but I love the pictures of the ones Ken has made. The tubes are the same length, but that doesn't mean you couldn't use a longer tube. Just call Jim at Berea and have him send you a few longer tubes. Any slimline kit can be altered quite a bit. The Streamlined Slimline is a nice looking kit, and I'm going to have to try it sometime. But I have to admit I like the style of the clip on the Sing pen! ;)

Thanks again for the compliments everybody! I appreciate your feedback.

Scott.

Hi Jim - Here's the picture showing the figure.

Ah, very nice. Good centering of the grain in the middle "cup" and the crotch figure really shows up nicely on the wide rim. Great job! Beautiful piece!

Nice job Scott!

I remember the first bowl turned out of that same birch tree that Ray Johnson turned. The color and the spalting patern made it look like flames, really beautiful like yours. That tree is gone now so I guess I should go out back and knock down another one and get the spalting process going, gotta keep you in wood you know. :-)

Jim - Thanks! I appreciate the comments!

Sophie - And thanks again for giving me a piece of this wood! I still have one more chunk, and I cut up all the little pieces into pen blanks, so this will give me enjoyment for quite a while! I still keep hoping to drag my Wife up there for a visit. Now that she's met Dave and Sandy Smith, my odds ar a little better!

Take care all!

Scott.
