I have had an unusual request to apply a wood veneer on a steel substrate. Can this be done with success? My concerns would be what glues to use and difference in expansion rates. The assemblies would be small (approx 4" X 6"). I would appreciate hearing any other concerns or experiences any of you might have. TIA

The whole point in making veneer thin is that after you fasten it firmly to a substrate, any movement of the substrate takes the veneer with it. The thin wood is not strong enough to resist.

I've used epoxy to fasten wood veneer to steel. Look for the thin kind intended for fiberglassing, not the thick stuff with a consistency like toothpaste. West Systems and System Three are two good brands. You can find them at marine-supply places, and Woodcraft sells one or the other of them.

Polyurethane glue will work very well.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll have to give it a try on some samples and see how it works before commiting to the real thing.
