I got motivated after going to the Desert Woodturning Roundup and this is what I came up with. It is Honey locust and is about 8 x 2.5. The texture was burnt in using a pyrography pen and the finish is Watco.

Very nice execution! I really like your technique in this piece. Starting to want a woodburning set... Oh no! Further into the abyss...

Mike,
That is great. I'm guessing Molly Winton was at the Round Up. She is one of my favorite hot new artists in the Abyss. I saw her at the AAW Symposium in Luoisville. Her demo on branding and pyro work is excellent.

Good work

Wow, never thought of "burning in" as a way to create artwork on your piece. Learning something new everyday from fellow Creekers. Pretty cool design!:)

Great work Mike! Did you burn that entire area with a pen? or did you use a torch? Seems like a lot of work, but it paid off handsomely.

Where does one fine the woodburning equipment & what is needed? When I've looked I find either cheap stuff made for kids or what seems expensive (to me anyway) stuff that seems made for someone considerabley more artistic than myself. Is there not a middle range?

Beautiful work, Mike! Looks really good.

I got a Razortip recently but haven't been brave enough to do anything other than sign my name with it.

Thanks everyone
Frank - No Molly was not one of the demonstrators but I am familiar with her work. Art Liestman talked about burning in his demo's ( though different use of burning) and Binh Pho mentioned using positive and negative space in one of his demos ( though in respect to pierceing) and I kind of went from their.
Greg - I have the burnmaster hawk that runs about $96. I have never used another unit so I can't compare it to any other but it seems to work good.

I have had the oppertunity to hold this and believe me, it is a very nice piece. The burned in texture has a different feel that dyed texture. I'm sure it will inspire a few copies.
Great stuff Mike.

Try a Cub Woodwriter available from all the ussual suspects, Crafts Supply, Packard, Woodcraft ... You can get adapters to use higher end 'pens' on the Cub so it not a short term deal. I think I paid $60 to 70 for mine a couple years back. When you want to go high end, go to the carvers supply catalogs.

Burning is fun. You can do it in the house to if you pace yourself. Smoke detector will let you know when you are going to fast. I think there are some boys here along the Creek that built 'brands' and used thier battery charger as the power source.

Again Mike that is a great piece.
