The wood had a soft/punky spot that ran the length of the log and I soaked it in CA to harden. It is sanded thru 240 and then soaked in Watco - just gonna leave it like it sits.

All comments/critiques/suggestions/opinions welcomed.

Absolutely goregeous piece Mark. I'm sure you have that boxed up and ready to come my way right:D .

As for the CA soak. Could you explain to me how you do that. I've heard it mentioned and I've sealed some cracks using CA but I'm not totally sure how you handle the punky soft areas using it. Thanks, Brian

Thanks all...

Brian, sorry if I misled you by my use of "soak"... I just applied a heavy dose of thin CA to the punky areas - straight from the bottle.

Mark, I do believe that is a King's Crown I see in both ends of this piece and you are the King of NE's. Absolutely perfect !!!!!

Mark,
I figured that might be what you meant. I was wondering how many coats to use and I wasn't for sure if it was the thin CA. Although I did have a piece I wish I could've literally soaked.

Another gorgeous black walnut piece! Wish I could turn that nice ;) Is the bark pretty fragile on these pieces? I have never turned an NE with that thick of a layer of bark!

Is the bark pretty fragile on these pieces?

The longer the wood sits around the worse it gets (the bark, that is)... as it dries out more the bark wants to pull away... I actually lost some bark on the high spots on this one, as you can tell if you compare them to the low spots.

Bravo,
Beautiful piece. As a novice, every time I see one of these I wonder how did they turn an oval. The pro's in my turning club tell me it is perfectly round but my eyes don't believe it. Way cool.

What a cool piece, love the grain and the punky part you CA'd, really adds character. Great job on leaving as much bark as you did. I like it! :)

Please don't leave it like it sits.

It would be markedly imprroved by leaving it on my front porch instead.

As usual Mark, Beautiful Job! I like the form of this a lot.:) Actually It is to cold for that walnut in Maine:p so it really needs to go to a warmer climate like Texas, what do you thinK?:D :D
