Way off topic, but I told one of my students I would try to find out...what is the chemical make-up of fire retardants used in the textile industry? For a 7th grader, he did a great job on a science project on textile flammability, but could not find the active ingredient(s) used to make them resistant to burning. Because a local science fair judge asked, he wants to be ready for district competition in March. My area is geology, not chemistry. Can anyone help me look good on this one? :-)

For a 7th grader
The simple answer might be "Baking Soda" mixed with water and then soak the cloth in it. Let it dry.
Give it a try on a rag outside your shop.

I hope that my old memory serves me correctly.
Don't I remember that you should have a box of baking soda around in the kitchen for fires?
