I purchased a new external hard drive recently. When I hooked it up it said that I did not have a high speed connection, but would operate at a lower speed. After a little research I am still a little confused. Is USB 2.0 a matter of hardware, software or none of the above. Any help would be appreciated. Reed

No expert but still run one old PC with windows 98, and I think that USB 2.0 devices will work on an older USB 1 computer but slower. You can add a USB 2.0 card to it though, if you want to.

USB 2.0 need different hardware. Newer PCs will have it built in, but for an older PC you can buy an Add-in card with a couple of new USB 2 ports on it.

Something like this - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1003994&sku=C250-3712

It works exactly like USB 1 but is about 50 times faster, which is a good thing if you are connecting high speed devices like hard disks to it.

Cheers
