Can anyone tell me what gauge wire I need to hook up my 5000 watt overhead heater ? I have 2 open 220 volt outlets and want to use one of these as a junction box to hardwire the heater. They each have their own breaker. The heater says it is 20.5 amps so the 30 amp breakers are okay but the installation instructions don't specify wire size. I guess they assume an electrician will install. Thanks

You'd use #10 for a 30A Circuit or #12 for a 20A Circuit. Code states #12 is good for 25A but generally use for up to 20A. if ya figure the % ratings it starts to be fun.. But yeah #10 will be the size wire you'd use for a 30A Circuit....

Thanks Terry, it has warmed up enough here for me to finally be able to work in my shop without heat.

Roy,
I agree with Terry. To be on the safe side I would use #10 wire. I will run 220 volt 5000 watt items for short periods on #12 but if it is something that will be on frequently like a heater I feel safer with #10.

Roy,

Use #10 wire on a double 30 amp breaker.

Just remenber PIE. P=IxE P-watts,I-20amps,E-220V.20amp#12 wire and 30amp#10 as stated by others. Most items in the average woodshop don't draw more then 30amps.Unless you have a welder.
