I got tired of kicking this chunk around my bandsaw and decided it was time to see what was inside. Ended up at 13" diameter by 6 1/2" deep. Textured rim, buffed gel poly finish.

Love the form, color of wood and finish! Textured rim adds just a little to the overall HF without taking away from the spalted wood. Very nice work!

Man I hate them sweetgums growing in the yard but they sure look nice once you chop 'em down and chuck 'em on the lathe! Beautiful piece.

Are these the same Gums that have that spiney ball that drops all over the yard? I think that's a gum anyway. Man if it is I've got a few at work to cut down that are in the way of a project.
Travis that's a great piece as I'm a big "spalt" fan. Love the texturing and the size of the opening. Wish I had made the opening bigger on my spalted HF now. 13", WOW! Excellent piece!!

That's the ones Brian.;) I had kept this blank inside the shop, but this one from last year http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=30359&highlight=Spalted+Sweetgum sat outside for a while and the spalting went wild. I've found that Sweetgum seems to spalt fairly easily.

Wow Travis. That one is awesome also. I'll have to go searching now as these trees are everywhere on the sites I'm working on. Most of which are being cleared for development now. I love the hue those have. Never would've though Gum of all woulds could be so beautiful. Brian

The spalting is awesome, the shape of the turning is excellent, the texturing looks great, and the finish is dandy... other than that its just pretty boring...:D

There was a time when I thought this stood for "Superman". Just curious Travis, have your ever tried the new Kryptonite tools?

That's another in the ongoing stream of beautiful work.
