Hmmmmm. . . . this is killing me. I believe the difference in indexed spiral and shelix to be the orientation of the cutter edge to the axis(?). Grizzly's index spirals are parallel to the feed and shelix are on a shear path, yes?

I was planning on drop a grand on a real planer but this deal is very interesting.

Time for some more research.

FWIW my limited looking so far indicates that Glenn is correct in that the two heads inserts hit the wood at a different angle. It also indicates that both are multiple time better than straight knives.

ETA: I would be curious to hear how well the inserts hold up before replacing. HSS knives are cheap to sharpen, those inserts would be a bit expensive after the last "flip".

Having just asked that question of tech support at Grizzly, the answer is, you replace them after you use all four sides of the insert. No adjustment or set up is required. Not recommended for heavy stock removal.

Note that on the Grizzly site, you can get the 8" with straight knives, plus a spare Shelix head (both on sale) for about the same as the 8" with the Grizzly spiral head.... Almost like a 2 for one. Then who cares if you nick some knives cleaning up rough stock.

I was just in the market for a "regular" 8" jointer. Now I may end up spending way more than expected. Thanks.....
