Ok you guys that do these segmented turnings have peaked my interest. What books, video's, etc. would get me started? Hopefully there are some videos as I learn more by watching. Thanks.

Bernie

I've never done any segmented turnings, but if and when I try it, I would be using the DVD by Curt Theobald "Introduction to Segmented Turnings". This is detailed almost to the point of boring, but that's good for those who have never tried it.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bernie,

One of our own is probably the world master; Malcom Tibbets. I have his book and it's excellent.

Hi Bernie,

The Art of Segmented Turning by Malcolm Tibbets is the best book around.
Woodturning with Ray Allen is very informative
Segmented Turning, a complete guide by Ron Hampton is soso.

I just checked with the Goodland Public Library. They don't have any Segmented Turning Videos. Sorry:(

It's my understanding that you won't find any videos in the Goodland Public Libary. They have a few 8-track tapes in the "What's New" section, but that's about it.

http://smartflix.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1674:5a0a86b2544d970e3b8daccb056de702

Keep it a week and send it back.
EDIT: MAybe buying directly from Curt is better http://www.curttheobald.com/store.html It's $26 and you get to keep it.

Personally....I think I could make a video for ya Bernie.

Class #1
1. Find some sticks
2. Cut the sticks into pieces
3. Glue the pieces together.
4. Cut the glued stick pieces with a chisel while spinning at high speed.

In our advanced class, we'll discuss making pictures with the stick pieces.;)

I currently have the Ray Allen book from my local library and it's very good. I've also had good luck with interlibrary loan. I just send a message to my local library with all the pertinent info on the book I want and I usually get a call in about a week that it's in. They always ask how much I'm willing to pay, just in case the lending library has a charge. I always say $5 max but I have yet to be charged for an interlibrary loan. Good way to see a book before you plunk down a bunch of money on a book that might not be what you need.

I have to agree with the above mentioned. I did my first segmented pieces by following the guidelines in Ray Allen's book. Soon after I got Malcolm Tibbetts book. Ray's book will give you a solid understanding of how to do it and Malcolms book will tell you how to take it to the next level of creativity. Between the two you'll be a pro.:D There's also a program called woodturner studio that will do most all your segment sizing, angles, shaping and coloring. Malcolm actually turned me on to it. If I can help in any way please let me know. Good luck.:D

On second thought...maybe you should pass on that Theobald guy.
He made this:

Heck...That's what most of my pieces look like!

HAHA. The one I just did, did that when I tightened the press too much. I had to replace the 2 upper walnut rings. (I hate when that happens)

LOL :D John our library is the same as Tyler's. No turning books at all.

Thanks for the info. I will be doing some looking. Like I said I can learn more from video's and watching than by reading.

You probably saw this in the other post but this was designed on the program "Woodturners Studio" I was able to see it before I made it.

Hey Bill on that program, does it have a free trial. Also can you make bmp or other pic formats of the finished project? Are they in 3d or 2d? How much does it cost?

Sorry to hijack the thread. PM me with the info to stop the hijacking!

I think it was about 80 bucks and it'll let you choose thickness, cushion, number of segments, gap if you want an open segment. It'll also let you see it layed out flat and also spin in any direction. Tells you angle to cut and it has a feature called bielzer I think and it allows you to change the shape of the whole thing not one ring at a time. The only thing I don't like is that it won't let you do shapes other than squares or rectangles to create patterns. It's very helpful in the overall design and shape. I'll post pics of the printouts tomorrow.:D No free trials that I know of though.

The above software is called Segmented Project Planner. Woodturner Studio is sold by Craft Supply USA for $69.99. Go to their website and type in Woodturner Studio. I don't think the one above is the same software.
