pad materials

what do you guys use to make your finishing pads ?
I would like to try padding on some shellac, just not sure
what to use for pads.

First, you want all cotton for the surface, for some reason polyester fabrics just don't feel right. An old, well washed, white percale sheet works well for the outside. For the inside anything absorbant--old t-shirt works fine. Just work the cover around the filler so there are no wrinkles on the surface that will touch the surface to be finished.
