A fire on Saturday destroyed a woodworking shop in Bergen, NY that made custom podiums, leturnes and altars for churches. It employed about 16 woodworkers/artesians. Not only was a lot of classic big iron lost, but also bench after bench of hand tools used by these woodworkers in creating these master pieces. Many were non replacable tools of the past.

Also, I read where Camelius Knife in Syracuse, NY closed. It historically had been a large scale knife manufacturer, but was also a source of custom iron for planes, chisels and carving tools for the disserning woodworker.

Very sad story.
Does anyone know what caused the fire?

Acording to Wikipedia, Camillus Cutlery Co., Camillus, NY, closed Feb. 28, 2007 citing "inability to compete with foreign manufacturers." The company had been making knives, etc., there since 1876. I still have my Navy knife made by Camillus given to me during World War II. Sad.

Terrible news, but put into perspective, at least no one was hurt / killed. That would have been a much worse tragedy.
