Good evening.

Simple question. Have any of you ever built a table lamp, and if so, would you mind sharing your experiences, sources, and pics if you have them? I am considering doing a couple like this. I have mocked it up in sketchup for dimensions, etc.... I have found relatively few plans anywhere for table lamps.

Thanks in advance for sharing any information you have on this.

I just completed my first lamp last week. Mine is more of a candlestick type lamp. I found it to be relatively easy to make. Drilling the hole down through the lamp proved to be the most challenging part. I used an 18" auger bit along with several height adjustments on my DP. I'll try to post some pics soon. One thing I would suggest is getting the lamp shade first. If I had compared the lamp to the lamp shade, I think I could have made a much better-looking lamp. It turned out a bit tall I think. Good luck.

I have a suggestion for drilling the hole down a long lamp post. Make your blank about 1/8" wider than you need (for the saw blade kerf) and cut in half. Now use your router with a bull nose bit and rout both mating surfaces and re-glue the post creating a "hole" down the middle. Jointing the mating surfaces will make sure the glue line is virtually invisible. Now you can turn it or flute it or what ever architectural embellishments you may want to make.

I built a couple that were inspired by Wood Mag's plans. I bought paper shades with an appropriate shape for the style, but did not attempt to build the mica shade that's in their pic...sorry I don't have a digital pic of my exact lamps.

I have made several turned lamps out of Aspen. It is easy to use a lamp auger on a lathe to create the whole for the wiring.

I made two floor lamps which were quite similar to the one you want to build. PM your email address and I will send the plans.

Irvin, my wife is just completing the satined glass shades for a pair of lamps very similar to what you indicated (Arts and Crafts style).

Diann is the stained glass person in our house, I do the woodworking.

My lamps are quarter sawn white oak of course.

Regards, Rod.

That's a nice looking lamp. The other lamps posted look pretty darn good too. Very creative and classy. Here's some pictures of a Torch Lamp and a Skyscaper Lamp made from poplar.

* Torch Lamp: The base of torch lamps are done but the picture below does not show the final faux brushed metal finish. I'm still working on the acrylic shades which have proven to be a difficult challenge to say the least.

* Skyscraper Lamp: As far as the skyscraper lamp goes, it's done and has a faux black marble finish with fluted gold leaf in the middle section. I don't have any quality pictures of it yet as my photography skills are nothing to be desired. Computer generated renderings is all I can show right now.

All electrical lamp parts were bought either from Ace Hardware, or scavenged from new (cheap) lamps from Ikea. I recommend that you 1st buy a lamp shade similar to your picture and then adjust the design of the base accordingly. It's a lot harder the other way around.
