Not sure what to call this. It's shaped sorta like a toadstool without the stem. The shape just didn't come out right as this was my first attempt at doing one and going through a 1" hole. No laser or captive system either and as you can tell I got awfully thin on the top half, less than 1/16". Not satisfied with the finish either. I started out with BLO and then ended up going to buffing compounds and wax. Should've waited and went with the Duravar or something a little more shiny, or something... Any way, it measures 6" tall and 9 1/2" diameter. The wife likes it and has flowers in it now. Oh well...

Interesting design, Brian. Not sure what to call it either but I like it. Beautiful wood, too.

Thin is "in". Wood is gorgeous. Reminds me of a "saucer". How about, "Beam me up, Scotty"?

Nice Brian, beautiful wood.
Since the wife has it, her opinion is the only one that matters:D

Treasure the turning. Though Moms love anything, spouses seem to do the opposite. If my wife likes it, I know I've really accomplished something.
Spalted wood seems to end up with enough surface irregularities after sanding that a shine is unattractive. I think you made a good choice on the finish, though that piece really seems farther gone than I would have chosen to hollow. Lacking the skill, and the motivation to treat for stiffening, I keep to firmer wood.
You know that spalted branches make great toadstools, right? Fungus in fungi as they say.

I am with George. If the LOML likes it then I know I have made a gem. I really like the wood and it has a interesting shape. Nice job.

Unique shape that deserves a name! Beautiful wood! We all learn as we go and like everyone else has stated - if the Wife likes it - good enough!

The wood is great looking and the shape is interesting. Maybe you could make a "family" of these of various sizes. Nice job.

That's one of those shapes that defies all the rules about how things should be and still looks great and really catches your eye. Looks great to me anyway.
