All,
Here are some pictures of a platform bed I just completed. My wife really wanted a platform bed, and it has to be just about the least demanding (technically) bed one can make. The base is plywood:

On the top we put a futon mattress which does not require a box spring. All in all, very comfortable and the color fits into the room, well, like the bed was custom made for it!

Very nice look and nice finish.

You must have a much better futon mattress than the monster we had, I wouldn't want to spend the nite on the one we have.

Will the protruding bolt heads (at least that's what it looks like when I pull up the pic) damage the back of the mattress?? :confused:
