What is the lift/drive mechanism for this JessEm Mast-R-Lift 02101. If you go by the images on the JessEm or Woodcraft websites, it appears to be a direct drive configuration with the crank positioned on the center line. However, if you look at the User Manual on JessEM.com or on Amazon - it looks to be a belt driven lift - with the crank located on the corner.

Have they changed something here? If so does anyone know why?

It's a single screw drive.

Thanks Glenn... but do you know if this is a direct drive or does it use a belt as part of the lift mechanism.

IIRC the crank operates a threaded shaft so I'll say direct drive. No intermediate gears or belts. However, I understand the confusion as their owners manual shows the crank off in the corner which would require a belt or chain. Hmmmm.... hopefully an owner of the particular model will chime in. Or call - 1-866-272-7492 for cust serv.

I have the Jessem with the crank on the side of the table. It is driven by a belt.

The Rockler Jessem lift I bought about 3 yrs ago is belt driven ... If I were buying today I would seriously consider the Woodpeck Quick lift.

When in doubt, go to the source:
http://www.jessem.com/mast_r_lift.htm

The Jessem site shows it is direct drive. They do have other models that use belts, but I am assuming all of the MastRLifts are direct-drive.

Jake,

It was the JessEm site that contributed to my confusion. The image of the Mast-R-Lift that is represented in their "User Manual" does not match the image on the product page. The trouble is I don't know which one is correct.

Actually, check out the "Smarlift" from Jointech. I've one of these and really like it. You can get digital read out ... or not.

Barry,

The Jointech unit is pretty impressive but a little more than I wanted to spend for a lift.

I called Jessem after I bought my first Mast-R-Lift and their explanation was that the belt drive was the original model which has since been replaced with a direct drive. Both of the one's I have (one is about 1.5 yrs old and the other is 3 months old) are direct drive.

Thanks Gilbert. Brand new Jessem arrived yesterday. I was looking all over that thing for a belt. :) I can't believe how sturdy and precise it appears to be built.

Thanks Gilbert! That was the definitive answer I needed.
