I'll be spending some time in LA area and Bay area in the next few weeks. Do any of you fellow woodworkers know of good/intersting stores to visit? Mainly interested in hand tools and such. Thanks!

I can't recommend a store....except.....the book store adjacent to the Gamble House. I would not travel in the area and pass up the opportunity to visit this Greene and Greene masterpiece.

Japan Woodworker store - 1731 Clement Avenue, Alameda, California 94501

I have some of their mujingfang rosewood planes and would love to hold some of their chisels and molding planes to see how my hands like them.

Here's a link to a page from our woodworkers club. It lists lots of places our members frequent.

All of these places are near LA (near is relative here). del Mano is a store and the others have bookstores attached.

Are you interested in turning? Then you should not miss del Mano in Brentwood (West LA). I think it's the premier store (nationally recognized) for turning and they have other items of interest.

If you are interested in architecture and uniquely designed furniture, I would also suggest a visit to the Gamble House in Pasadena. Take a tour if you can -- it's something you will only see here.

Also, depending on where you are and how much time you have, a visit to Sam Maloof's house (near Altadena) is certainly in order. They have tours a couple of days a week. Again, this is something you will not find anywhere else. All of these places are on the web.

The Sawdust Shop (http://www.thesawdustshop.com/) - not many handtools, but is well worth a visit.

For handtools, visit Hida Tool (http://www.hidatool.com/).
