Wow Travis - beautiful work as we have all come to expect! Love the contrast between the dark wood in the body and the light collar. Last photo really shocked me as I didn't expect the sapwood - love the contrast!!

Once again - great work!

When your surface looks that good in gloss black, you know you've done well. That's a beauty Travis.

Travis,

Where are you finding Ebony of that size? Everywhere I look, all I see is 1x1x12 and other small spindle/pen blanks.

Your hollow form is nicely proportioned.

Very stunning piece Travis. Although those weren't the first words that came out of my mouth when I opened this thread.

Beautiful finish.

Awesome piece Travis! Great contrasts.

Of course at $75/bd ft for Gabon Ebony the $250 starting bid isn't going to take it home I don't think. Then add the excellent craftmanship and presentation, there's going to be a bidding war.

Again, you have produced a seriously beautiful piece Travis!

Wow! Usually, I think collars look like "cheating," but this one really makes the piece exquisite.

Thats a beauty! My cousin works for a orphanage type thing over in Uganda and last time she was here her husband was showing me some carvings out of ebony. The stuff felt like rock. Was it hard to turn? Tough on tools? They also told me about some african man that has a homemade lathe. His son turns it back and forth with a leather strap and he stabs the tool in at just the right time when the lathe is turning the correct way and then withdraws it on the backstroke. The stuff he made was unbelievable. Seems people over there ahve a lot of patience.

Beautiful job Travis. When you going to open the gallery?

Travis this one is in a class all by it's self. Absolutely stunning the contrast of the woods is awsome and of course the work is above reproach. My hat is off to you sir.

Thanks guys. Rich, it wasn'treally any harder to turn than any other hardwood, other than perhaps clearing the shavings a little more frequently while hollowing. I had to touch up the cutter a couple times because of the oily buildup on them.

Travis,
I've noticed you use the Seal-a-Cell finish on quite a few of your turnings. I love the way your finish looks and am wonder how it is applied. I've never used that brand or quite that type of finish. Can you gives us your steps for application? Thanks,
Brian

Brian/ Malcolm, I used General Finishes clear, http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?FamilyID=5189 . Wiped on with a scrap of old T-shirt, then wiped off with paper towel when tacky, repeated twice over a couple days. Then wiped on a light coat and buffed with the Beall system after the last coat cured.

I can vouch for Seal-A-Cell. Been using it for about a year and really love the results. It's slow drying but sure gives a good finish (as can be seen in Travis' beautiful piece).

For those who like high gloss urethane finishes they (General Finish) also have another wipe-on product called Arm-R-Seal. A few coats of it and your piece will look like glass.
