View Full Version : Separate Board for Turners?

I am not a turner, yet, but I did take a lesson from Bill Grumbine which I really enjoyed.

I always thought the old Pond should have had a separate board for turners. My reason was there were so many turning questions and posts, if they had their own board, it would have been bigger than the Neanders.

I am not trying to divide the community into endless factions, merely give the turners a place to call home. Then, when I finally take my Jet Mini lathe out of the box, I'll know where to go for information.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this idea from Keith and the "regular" turners that lurk here.

Suggestions for a name would be good too...

Maybe, "Mill turnings"?

I would agree and disagree. On one hand, a seperate forum for turners would allow some seperation from the power tool forum, thus not overloading it with turning questions and posts. It would be nice to go there and just learn about turning from others. On the other hand, I would have to say that if we did that, we would almost be subdividing ourselves to much, we might only have a few precious minutes at the computer, and may only stay at the power tool forum, when we might be able to quickly answer somebody's question on the turning forum. I think that the way Wayne and Keith have it is okay, with a forum for Neanderthal's & Power Tool users, along with support & design forums. Doing it this way enables us to skip over posts that we don't want to read, and read the ones we want, without missing anything in different sections. I'd hate to see a bunch of different forums for different operations--Drill Press forum, Table Saw forum, Block-planers forum, etc... That would also create more work for the Admin.'s & Moderator's, having to go to all the different forums multiple times to check the posts. This way is much simpler. Martin, please don't take this post the wrong way, I fully understand your point of view, it would be nice, and I'll support this site either way! Thanks for letting me ramble.

Joe,

Your points are well made and well taken...

I wasn't sure a separate turner board was a perfect idea, but I thought I would throw it out for discussion.

I don't consider myself a turner yet, so I am happy to let the turners decide if they want this or not.

If they want one, fine, if not fine, I am ok either way.

I am just thankful that Keith has given us a new place to call home, and I want to support his efforts.

Good afternoon men (and ladies)

I for one would like to see the turners stay in the general population. How do you think we got so many turners on the Pond anyway? :D There are a lot of folks who did not turn, or who had no intentions of turning, who were sucked into turning by looking at the posts of those of us already infected.

I know that it can be sort of overwhelming when there are a lot of posts specific to turning, but if we go off in our own little corner, I think it might be detrimental to both groups. I think the turning board over at Wood Central suffers because it is split off from the rest.

And Martin, we need to get you working on that table so you can turn more stuff!;)

Good points Bill.

By the way, how long did it take you to complete your table from start to finish? I've got at least that long, haven't I?:D

Seriously, I have got two bedside tables in various stages of construction, I need to build a router table, and my wife wants her couch table I promised her two years ago. Then I will finish the candle stand and send you a picture. I promise.

I will be looking to see you again, maybe this summer, to work on turning shaker knobs. I would like to make some knobs that are not in the usual woods you can purchase. Then I have an excuse to break out the mini lathe and get serious about turning.

Gotta pack for work now, Albany by mornin'.

I remember this discussion on the Pond not too long ago. The final decision was to keep the forums to as low a number as possible to keep everyone together. This is fine with me but...

This software has a feature button on the main screen called "View New Posts". This will scan all of the forums you are subscribed to and provide a custom page listing for you. You will never miss a post using this feature and all of the moderators will use this feature exclusively. Everyone may want to discuss this again as we have additional tools to use, I don't have a preference and would be glad to create another forum (After the next backup) if that is what everyone wants.

Ohhh, a wise guy, eh??? Now the clock is ticking Mister. I'll be watching, and if you go past the four year limit, you'll be hearing from me!:p

I agree with everything Bill said wholeheartedly, especially his statement that the WC turning forum has suffered greatly from not being part of the main forum.

There are a good number of turners on the Pond who would not be turners if it had been a separate forum, myself included.

Best Regards,

I vote for keeping the family together. Many of us turners enjoy the flat work just as much as the turning and I'd hate to think that I'd miss something if we were sent to different rooms :(

I like the idea of turners staying in the same forum. That is how I found all of the information on turning when I started. It is so helpful to new turners who don't know where to look for specialty forums. The one on the Pond was a great help.
