Here's my first attempt at a NE. It's a piece of manzanita root. It measures about 3-1/2 inches in diameter and about 2 inches tall. Tough little booger. When I was sanding the inside it kept trying to take my fingers out. You guys that do these regularly are real pros. My hats off to you.

Bill,

You did really well. Good job!

I remember my NE manzanita burl bowl...it is my toughest piece to date.

Did you encounter any sand/stone that loves to eats the edge of your tool? :D

Not that I know of. It sure was a tough little piece of wood though. I did have to sharpen a few times. It almost took tools out of my hands on a couple of occasions. I figured with a Manzanita the whole thing is a natural edge.:D

You are lucky then. Mine was a driftwood ...full of cracks that are filled with sand. I cleaned them but there are still some that remained. Inside the wood I also encountered a few rocks that the root engulped while growing...a couple are about 1/2" in dia. It is major PITA.

Manzanita is a very hard wood too...but finishes great!

Thanks. I'm trying. I must say though, the segmenting takes longer To build but it sure turns easier. I'm starting another vase. The last one went as a gift so the LOML wants one like it now. Here's a pic of a few of the rings and my home made ring press.

Bill that is a nice job on a very nice piece. That is a beauty for sure. Friend of mine said it is as hard or maybe a little harder than black locust which was my first bowl.

Thanks Steve. I figured in this case I'd start small and work my way up. not like i did with the segmented stuff.

I figure try a little of everything. I won't know if I like it if I don't try. This one, for as small as it was, was a challenge but I really like the end results. The only down side is finding the right piece of wood to do it to.

My Dad is going to be building a road on some land of his soon, and it will be going right through a huge manzanita patch. It didn't come to mind until seeing this, but I might have to "help" clear some of it out of there. Very nice bowl Bill, I like the form a lot.

Thanks Ed. It's a tiny little thing but the LOML decided it was perfect for a candle holder.
