Hi,

Here's a segmented vase, about 10" tall x 6" dia. Oak, walnut, purpleheart, and yellowheart.

Randy, it sure looks like you nailed the alignment of all the intersections - great job. Did you use Lloyd's software to lay out the design?

Thanks for the comments. Yup, I used Lloyd's program to develop the design. For those that don't know, Lloyd Johnson has a set of 3 programs for segmented turning...WoodturnerPro, 3DPro, and LaminationPro. It's the LaminationPro software that was used. The feature ring is 2nd generation lamination, which means that strips of wood were glued up, then cut (at 45) and reglued, then cut again at a different angle (20). Then those strips mitered into a ring. Lloyd's program lets you model the various angles and dimensions to see what the resulting laminations will look like. There are literally millions of combinations and to try by trial and error on wood would be incredibly time and wood consuming. There is also a book, out-of-print but obtainable on the used market, called "Laminated Designs In Wood" by Clarence Rannefeld which describes the process. The book and software go together...it's useful to have both to really understand the process.

I'm not sure if links to commercial web sites are permitted here, but just do a google search on "lamination pro" and it'll be right at the top.
