I'd never done a faceplate turning so I did this little thing with a left over ring from a segmented vessel and a piece of walnut with knot in it. I call it the paper plate because it's 1/16th of an inch thick. Probably won't last long but it was good practice.
Enjoy.:)

Bill, I think you'll be surprised at how strong that 1/16" thick walnut is! Not enough to sit on it, but it should be fine for normal display, etc. Beautiful piece!

Thanks Jim. When I get my Mayo lite I'll try something bigger. Kinda fun though.:)

Cool little piece. And I suspect Jim is right that it will be just fine even with use.

But its Miracle Whip! Mayo Lite is something less than the Mayo. Us big Jet pilots are better than that.

Bill - interesting little bowl! Looking forward to you getting your new lathe and the ability to turn larger items. You'll enjoy it!

What do you call the Jet 1442vs? Thats the one I have on layaway. I'm going to start building rings for a segmented piece so that when I get it I'm ready to go.:D

1442/1642 who cares we are big JET guys. You are going to enjoy the bigger machine. Can't wait to see it. Just sell the wife's washer and dryer, her car, the dog, anything ... get that thing home.

I don't even have room for it yet:( Gotta get rid of some of the f-work stuff I guess.:rolleyes:I think I'll get 2 more of the 3 wheel buffers then put 3 of the same wheels on each shaft. 3 for tripoli, 3 for white diamond and 3 for carnuba. then I can buff bigger stuff too. Gotta do something with the mini. The LOML doesn't even know yet.

Good looking piece. I get nervous at around an eighth of an inch. How did you hold it on the lathe?

When I started I used the mini jumbo jaws and turned the bottom with a recess so I could reverse chuck it. Then I used the nova midi to hold it inside the recess. I think I'm using the wrong gouge though, it caught very easily. I had to turn the gouge sideways.
