I'd given Shane an old tube lathe and he and Devin had fooled around with it making a bonker. SHane had a few questions so I asked them to come down for a weekend of turnin learnin.

I got Devin (9) started on a pen Saturday and he made two slimlines. Didn't get close-ups, but he did a fine job getting them the right size.

While Devin was working on the pens, I got Shane started on a mesquite bowl. I had to tell Shane that if he'd turn the lathe on the wood would come off a lot faster.:p

Since Devin finished up his pens on Saturday, I put a piece of dry cherry on the jet, and he did this bowl 2x6 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Shane is bringing his to a finish 5x12.

It was a great weekend. I had a lot of fun and I'll tell ya... you can learn a lot trying to help someone else learn. Other than the bonker they did together, these are their first turnings. I think they did a darn good job.

Anyway, both Shane and Devin are on the prowl for a new lathe.:D This was last weekend, and so far I haven't talked to my DIL, but I have a feeling I'll be in trouble.;)

Congratulations on a fine mentoring session! Looks like time well spent. I look forward to the day I can do that for someone else.

John, let's see, North out of Texas, I shotgun him while he is in Indiana!!!
Think if we get him a place to eat and stay in each state we can get him on the road?:)
Heck on his return trip all he has to do is check progress, eat and sleep.;) :D
