View Full Version : A little experiment

Well, I have to admit I was inspired watching Stuart Batty doing his off center square bowl at DWR a few weeks ago. So I thought I'd give it a go, although with a little change. I don't know if it made it easier or not making it round but I thought maybe a little less menacing.
It is sycamore about 6" overall diameter and the bowl part is about 2". It is just oiled right now, I'll buff later.
So far I have called this "Orbit", although I not sure I should be naming my pieces yet.
Anyway let me have it good, bad or indifferent.

Well, I wouldn't want to eat my cereal out of it! :D

Make sure it has a nice finish because it is one of those things people just HAVE to pick up and look at. Pretty cool concept and design.

A successful experiment, I think. Excellent! It's interesting that you posted this as I've been thinking about doing something with several mounting points like that just for fun.

I really like the looks of that - nice job. Once I finally get my lathe in, and get a bunch of practice, and learn how to turn normal bowls, I would like to try a small one of those. Really nice work.

Sweet! Yep, I wouldn't be able to keep my hands off of it.

Kevin, nice piece. Can't recall seeing a round offest like this. The more I look at it the more I like it !!

That's cool. Did you use counter weights to keep it from flopping or did you just let it fly? Either way, very cool stuff.

Nice idea very well executed. Keep up the experimentation.

Thanks fellas.
Of course now I'm going to have to go sand it again after reading this.

Raymond, no counter weights were used. It was amazing how even this little of a piece makes a lathe wobble. I turned most of it under 500 RPM.

A very cool idea that turned out well! Post a pic once you have it finished if you could. Really nice work!

Nothing like experimentation to make you feel alive eh? I really like this piece Kevin. Great job!:)

You picked a tough row to hoe, or should I say pattern to sand with the right angle rim. I generally sissy out and go with a curve where it joins the main "wing" because it sands a bit easier. I like the thought, and the lack of a base makes the "orbit" inclination a great point. Is it summer or winter in its hemisphere?

Next time you make an order to Klingspor, pick up a couple of their mini mops or mop kits. Friendly to almost any contour, and you can sand with the grain in a simple smooth form and get the finish that sanding across would give you only after another three grits.

Great looking piece and neat concept. Might I suggest making a stand to hold it for display?

That is a nice bit of work. Not only is the form cool, the wood and finsh are very nice.

Sweet turning... that is definitely a piece of art, although Andy might figure out how to get ice cream into it somehow ;)
