This is a piece of wood my son rescued from the wood pile and asked if I thought I could make something from it (that's my boy :D). So I ended up turning this and giving it to him to keep, sell, or gift. He hasn't decided yet...;)

I did a poor job of planning and executing the rim, so I ended up taking a Dremel to it and it turned out looking like saw teeth... I'm just leaving it as is and will try to do better next time.

8" wide, 4" tall, antique oil finish. Comments/critiques welcome.

That is dropdead gorgeous. Very simple shape, but the grain is awesome. I just love black cherry... I like the rim detail!

It turned out great Mark!

I have a question. Do you use an extension for your vacuum chuck to do the bottom?

Nope... and no vac on this one... just used a small cone-shaped jam chuck with some foam pad on it. Turned as much of the foot as I could and then sanded it by hand.

So is there a place out behind the auto mechanics shop at his high school where they can sell things like this?;)

That's just plain beautiful. And I like the screwed up rim so much I might try to screw up one of my next ones.

Very impressive Mark! I like the bark area and am amazed you managed to keep as much bark as you did. Rim treatment is different and proves once again that everything doesn't have to be perfectly round. Great wood color, grain and finish. Hope your son appreciates what he has his hands on!

No need to wrap it. I'll take it just like it is. I like that rim and nice job on the form Mark.

Very organic. Reminds me of a geode.
