Has any body ever read this book? And if so what are your thoughts on it, bacsiclay I am looking for the best book on scorll sawing to learn on. I do know basically the best way to learn is just start cutting but what I need the most help on is the blade selection (basically blade to woods, thickness, general sawing ect.) I just don’t want to buy blades that aren’t going to be useful to my needs and waste the time and wood if I can get the same answers here or in a reference book ….thanks

Richard, I don't know anything about that book. My first book was by Patrick Spielman (http://www.amazon.com/Scroll-Saw-Handbook-Patrick-Spielman/dp/0806947705/sr=1-4/qid=1172166929/ref=sr_1_4/102-5435788-8570565?ie=UTF8&s=books). Plenty of basic info and so many copies around it can be found cheap. As far as blades, don't waste your money on bargin blades. They almost made me give up on scrolling until I bought some Flying Dutchman blades. I love em. Haven't tried any of the other major brands tho. Good luck and have fun, it can be addicting.

I have both the John Nelson and the Pat Speilman plus one by Zach somebody. There all about the same. Do this, don't do this. All of them have some good tips and go through the basics but I think the best advice is grab some scraps of different species of woods, thicknesses and such, clamp a blade and get the feel. As long as you have the idea of blade number to type of wood and thickness your in good shape. There's a great magazine called Scrollsaw woodworking and crafts. Great tips, reviews and some good patterns. Rick Hutcheson has a great site also. Flying Dutchman and Pegas are some great blades to use.

It is a very good book because not only will it give you the excersies to practice with but will give you helpful hints. It would be money well spent along with a decent saw and good blades.

As far a blade type/thickness I found some nice printable charts when I was searching on the internet for blades. Olsen has one if you go to their site. I printed it and hung it on the wall by my scroll saw. I'm a new scroller so I reference it alot.

Paul the cart on the Olson blade site is very informative that is one of the things I was looking for, (something along those lines) it will definitely help me in regards to buying some blades and talking with the people at the flying Dutchman site I think its time to get started .Also at looking at all the reviews on the net and the input here I think I will get the book also. (Cheap enough at $12:00)and I am also going to keep a eye out for that scrollsaw magzine.... thanks for all the help.

Another great scrolling magazine is Creative Woodworks and Crafts. It too can be found on news stands and bookstores. For alot of scrolling info here is Rick Hutcheson's site link. http://www.scrollsaws.com/ Also here is Mike's site for the Flying Dutchman blades. www.mikesworkshop.com (http://www.mikesworkshop.com) These sites you will also find charts for blades and drill bits. Good luck as you venture into a very relaxing hobby world of scrolling.
