Just wanted to post this. I just ordered the jet 1642 2 HP 220 volt lathe. Got a great price at the Toolnut. This was the culmination of several weeks of reading posts - anguishing over features - vasilating between 115 0r 220 - going back and forth between the Nova DVR Xp and the 1642. I think what made the decision was that everything came with the 1642. The Nova was nice but you had to buy the extras (stand, headstock handwheel, etc.) not to mention it was higher in price. The extra money let me purchase the lithium Ion 18 volt Makita drill/driver. All of my major tools are jet. My table saw is 220 so the lathe can share that circuit. (i don't forsee running both at the same time.) Now comes the wait!!! I am having it shipped to my work address as it is a commercial site and they have a fork lift to take it off the truck. I'll open the crate and break it down to smaller pieces so I can handle it easier when I get it to the shop. From what I have read in the forums the 1642 is a great lathe. thanks for posting about it! It helped in my decision.

Between those two I believe you definitely made the right choice. The 1642 is a solid machine. The Nova is good as well but for all the reasons you pointed to, the 1642 is the better choice IMHO.

CONGRATS!!!

Given the same scenario I would most likely take the same choice you did.

Congrats! You could hardly go wrong with either but I think you'll love the 1642. It's enough lathe that you won't likely be tempted to upgrade for quite a while. IMHO it's one of the best-in-class for that price range.

Just curious, in all the ads for the Jet 1642 with EVS, I've never seen it mentioned that the motor reverses. I'm assuming it does, correct?

Dale,

I looked online at the 1642 manual and it does have a reverse switch.

Congrats David. That should last you for some time to come. Nice choice.

Congrats on your new lathe David! I've had mine since Nov 10, 2006 and absolutely love it. Make sure you post pics once it arrives!

Have fun with it and watch your back when assembling it - some of the items are a little on the heavy side!

:D Congratulations! You'll love it. We have the 1-1/2 hp one and it is great. The 2 hp can only be better.

We set ours up in the basement and used a hoist attached to the steel beam when attaching the legs. That really helped a lot.

Dave,
You will really love the new lathe. I have the 1 1/2hp jet and it's everything I was hoping for (and then some)! Yes, it does have a reversing switch and it does come in handy!
Enjoy! :)
