I started turning late last year when I inherited a POS Harbor Freight lathe, and it died soon after I became addicted. I was super busy through the holidays, and purchased a Rikon Mini in Jan. This weekend was the first time I had any spare time to use it, and I decided that I would try to learn how to do a hollow form. It is endgrain mesquite from the firewood pile, about 8.5" high by 6.5", with a 1.7" opening. I got the walls down to just under 1/4". When I opened my finish, it had gone bad, so I just sanded and put on some BLO. My next project will be making a donut chuck so that I can cut off the tenon and clean up the bottom. Any comments or critiques are welcome.

Can I ask which hollowing tools you used, and why did you pick that particular one?

Great HF, Jason! What do use for hollowing tools? I also bought a Rikon and have turned many a bowl but really want to try a hf, just not sure what to buy for a tool. Any suggestions?

Thanks to everyone for all of the nice comments. I am so excited to try another one as soon as I get some more free time.

Jerry and Wilbur- I used the Sorby Midi hollowing tool. It was the only one they had at my local WW store. I was stretching it's limits as far as depth, so I think I am going to need to buy a larger one. Being that this was my first HF, I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seemed to work pretty well. It took me a while to figure out the best height for the tool rest, and the best angle for the cutter, but once I got the hang of it, it went surprisingly fast. I will probably get the larger sorby, rather than another brand, both because I liked the midi sized one, and because my local WW store now has the larger one in stock.
