I'm a novice, and making a mitered-corner jewelry box.. does anyone suggest the best place to get slot hinges and the blade that cuts the slots?

thanks a lot!

Matt,

If these are the hinges you are talking about I just got a bunch from this place, cheapest I've ever found and you can get the blade here also.

What sort of tool does there blade fit on and how do you cut the hinge. It looks like a biscuit joiner would be too big

Hello,

If you have a biscut jointer Lamello makes hinges that the slot is cut with the biscut jointer. The hinges are pretty nice ones at that. I have not used them but when I bought my Lamello biscut jointer the dealer gave me a sample packet of the different items that can be used with the biscut cutter.

its a saw type blade on an arbor that mounts in your drill press. as a matter of fact I just broke mine today and what Ben says I'm going to look into. That would be the ticket. Can you give me more information on that Ben?

Woodcraft is one of the big suppliers of the saw blades and arbors. It's a rip off what they get for them. Here is a link to the same darn thing from Grizzly and a much more realistic price. Check out Rockler for the hinges, they have more options and sizes:

Note that Woodcraft and some others get 20.00 plus for the arbor and then 20.00 plus for ea of the 2 blades. Grizzly sells a couple more sizes of blades as well. I have the wood craft one and it is exactly the same thing. I use this on my drill press and it works great. Some use it in the router table but they will burn up the blades quicker in the router table but will still work and for the grizzly price no biggie.

Cory,

Thanks for the info, those are great prices on the cutters and arbors. However the craft place still has the best price on the hinges, they have more of a selection than rockler and I just picked up 50 pair for $20 that included the shipping. Just received them the other day, same quality as the ones I got from woodcraft for $2.50 a pair.

Thanks for that info. What would you recommend as the best for jewelry boxes: barrel hinges (the miniature kind - 5mm) or slot hinges? (With the barrel hinges you don't need a slot cutter, etc..) Thanks!

For me definitely slot hinges. Barrel hinges will work but for larger boxes I would want the slotted hinges. Barrell hinges work great for smaller pen sized boxes or at least the 5mm size. 10mm requires at least 1/2 inch stock and that leaves like 1/32 on the walls of the stock. You have to chamfer both on the back edge and the slotted hinge requires a chamfer and a small rebate.

Rob,

I just looked the items up in one of my catalogs. The cat. that I am looking at is Select Machinery, they are out of New York, Rego Park N.Y. Really nice people, This is just someone I use, Lamello is the manufacture so anyone that deals with Lamello will have this available. They are called Duplex hinges They are a two piece hinge and they come in brass, black, nickel and a burnished brass. Part numbers are 166011, 166012, 166013, 166003 and 166023. I see in my cat. that they are not cheap, 10 pair for about $45.00 but being from Lamello you know it is quality stuff.

hope this helps
Ben
