Not project finishing but finishing related

My BIL got a new entry door installed and needs to stain and finish the molding. He chose a dark stain to match the door and Minwax poly. Any tips that can be offered are appreciated.

Check the label on the Poly. I may be wrong but I don't think that stuff holds up well in an exterior application. It will work OK inside. On the inside I would finishthe wood before I attach the trim. Easier than cutting in. Other may have different ideas

It's for an inside application and the contractors have already installed the molding.

Your/his poly should work ok. He should try a test run on some scrap to be sure.
