Right around 1700 bdft of oak going into the kiln. Should be at 6% in a month or so.

I have a question. Has anyone out there had a problem with not stressing lumber after kiln drying, if it has been air dried first. The kiln operator says it only needs to be stressed (steamed) after the kiln drying if it hasn't been air dried to 10-12 percent first. A friend of mine says it should always be stressed. I haven't had a problem so far, all my oak is air dried at least 1 year, the lumber pictured is 2 year air dried & down to 10 percent then it goes in the kiln for a month & taken down to 6 percent. I take it back to the shop & stack it inside. It usually sits there for a month or so before I start using it. Any info or web site links on this would be greatly appreciated.

The conditioning cycle is used to relieve internal stress that may have developed during the fast kiln drying process (from green).

As your wood is well air dried before it goes into the kiln for finishing then the conditioning shouldn't be needed. The 10% wood could probably be used as is with a bit of acclimitising inside. Kiln will do that quicker of course.

Cheers

Hi Mark,

Ask over at Wood Web. They have a forum for sawmill and kiln operators. It is a site for professionals.
