I have a 14" Delta closed base bandsaw (28-254) with a 1HP motor. The saw is about 8-9 years old. The motor was totally or partially submerged in water during Hurricane Katrina. I didn't realize that until today when I took the access panel off and found the shaft frozen. I suspect that I may need to buy a new motor. I looked on Delta's Servicenet site but couldn't see a price for the motor. Anybody have suggestions on where I might get a replacement and what it might cost? Should I consider stepping up in HP to 1.5 and will that size motor bolt in without modifications?

A 1hp, 1725 rpm, 56 frame 5/8" shaft motor will the same as the factory motor.

Now is the time to go bigger. Anybody will be cheaper than Delta. Look into getting a TEFC motor. I have that saw and it has an open frame motor and none too much horse power.

It's entirely possible that the motor will run with just a new set of bearings. It's equally possible that everything inside is corroded beyond repair. Can't hurt to open it up and check.

A new 1 hp Baldor motor with specs as stated above can be found for about $165.--

Thanks to everyone for the responses. After partially removing the motor from the saw, I found that the shaft would turn after I was able to put a little more torque on the pulley. Maybe with a clean-up and new bearings it might not be as far gone as I feared. If not, now I have numerous sources that I can use for a replacement. Thanks again!! - Jerry
