This is my latest bent laminate cane I just finished. It consist of 14 thin strips about
1/16" thick which I resawed on the band saw. I then cleaned them up on the WBS
so I would have a good smooth glue surface. I had made a form to bend the strips
around which was 4" in diameter, but even these thin strips broke. So I then soaked
them in water over night and bent them individually around a piece of 3" PVC pipe.
While they were still wet, I slid them off and placed a alligator clamp on each one and
left it to dry over night. The next day after the clamps were removed the strips held
the shape close to what I wanted. I used TITE BOND EXTEND glue because I had to
work quickly to get glue on all 14 pieces before the glue started to setup. I had cut
a radius piece to help aid in clamping the hard to pull tight handle of the cane and it
worked great. I covered all the clamping pieces of the jig with packing tape so glue
wouldn't stick to the cane and the jig. After it dried over night I hand planned one
surface flat and then ran it through the WBS to get the other side. A little round over
bit on the router and some sanding and then several coats of lacquer and it was done.
This one was made from red oak, walnut and purpleheart.
